Week 5 News!

We start getting sentimental when Week 5 rolls around because we know goodbyes are coming too soon. Time flies when you’re having fun, especially when you’re surrounded by a camp community like ours. It’s a true gift to see our Woodcrafters grow each day and to watch their skills, friendships, and confidence blossom. We’d like to give a special shout-out to our Woodcraft camp counselors, who pour their hearts and souls into each camp day to make activities and cabin life so welcoming and so much fun. They are superstars!

Now for your Woodcraft update:

Daily Schedules

Waking up to the camp bugle every morning really has its perks. Where else can you roll out of your cozy camp bed, still in your Woodcraft flannel PJs, and wander over to the dining hall with your camp friends while the morning fog rises over Lake Ka-nac-to where a delicious breakfast spread awaits?

Once our leisurely meal has come to an end, and before the campers complete their kitchen prep duties and head back to their cabins for clean-up, they get to read their schedules for the day. Fishing, Archery, Ropes, A-Field, SUP, Basketball, Nature, Swim, Ultimate Frisbee, Music, Canoeing, Riflery, Crafts, VBT, Mountain Biking, OLS, Rock Tower, Kayaking, and extra activities like Water Polo, Baking, Ping-Pong, Karaoke, Books and Bracelets on the Deck, Martial Arts, Campfire Skits, Diamond Swim, Games in the Dining Hall, and Library are just some of the many activities that fill our Woodcrafters’ days.

We know, we know. Many parents are saying exactly what you’re thinking—when is it our turn to go to camp?!

Trips

Our second-session cabin trips are almost all complete.

The Hadarondah and Outpost divisions hiked from Sis & Bubb Lake to enjoy a beautiful two-night campout at a spacious campsite overlooking Moss Lake. Their views from both atop and below their rocky outlook were spectacular.

Iroquois Village set out on a two-night adventure to hike Big Slide. They were prepared with backup plans should their attempt to summit Big Slide take longer than expected, but proper planning, great weather, and positive attitudes helped them reach their goal. They were rewarded with awesome views from the top!

The Wenonahs camped along a beautiful brook for two nights and explored Mt. Jo on their hiking day. Once atop Mt. Jo, they were able to look out over Heart Lake to Mount Marcy, Mount Colden, and the Algonquin Peaks. Definitely a sight for sore eyes (or legs)!

Ranger Post and Trail Camp teamed up and split into two combined groups this session. One crew is canoeing in the St. Regis Pond Canoe Area, which spans a network of 50 ponds across 1,600 acres and is the largest wilderness canoe area in the Northeastern United States. The other crew is exploring parts of the Great Range. Both are surely getting wet right now, and we know they’ll be excited to dry out their gear with better weather tomorrow!

Our Auroras are out on the canoe and hiking trails as well. One group, also under rainy skies at the moment, has been paddling within the Five Ponds Wilderness Area, which features old-growth forests, wetlands, and rugged backcountry trails. The other group will be exploring the Dix Range once the weather (and the rocks!) are a little drier.

Camp Wildlife

Twin fawns have been spotted on numerous occasions in our camp woods, and bass and sunnies are regulars in the lake. Additionally, Big Jake, Woodcraft’s legendary turtle, has been sighted. We estimate that he is well over 30 years old!

Frogs, toads, owls, and even a loon—we are lucky to be surrounded by nature. Sunny, camp’s Golden Retriever, does not qualify as wildlife but is absolutely a camper favorite. She snuggles generously, swims and boats with the rest of us, and enjoys all-camp campfires just as much as every Woodcrafter.

Special Events

Camp Halloween took shape as soon as we started our day with cider and donuts on the breakfast bar last Sunday. Individual and group camper costumes were incredibly creative, and we enjoyed brand-new Halloween games both inside and outside the dining hall this year. Pumpkin Chuckin’, Spooky Charades, Mummy Wrap, Pin the Face on the Pumpkin, and Haunted Golf were just some of the activities that brought new energy to the festivities.

Coming up, Woodcrafters are looking forward to Carnival, Olympics, and, of course, Candlelight.

Today is Wednesday, and Chicken & Eggplant Parmesan with a yummy Italian salad bar, followed by vanilla cake with blueberry frosting, was on the camp menu tonight! A light drizzle can be heard on camp’s red tin roofs as camp winds down for the night. Taps will soon be heard around the lake, and another awesome camp day will come to a close.
