Adirondack Woodcraft Summer Camps: Five Senses Nature Activity

Apr 22, 2020

Summer camp at Adirondack Woodcraft Camps is chock full of opportunities to connect with nature. Ever day our summer campers breathe in the fresh air around them while they tread on paths to and from activities and of course our summer camp activities and wilderness adventures themselves involve learning about, appreciating, and enjoying the forever wild natural beauty of the Adirondack Park.

Since you can’t be at summer camp at Woodcraft with us now, and because you might be somewhere where you can’t get outdoors, we have a great Earth Day activity for you! Transport yourself to your favorite natural space at Woodcraft, or in the beautiful Adirondack Park, from wherever you are. Appropriate for all ages, you can count on this easy and fun mindfulness activity to bring you peace and happiness.

Adirondack Woodcraft Summer Camps: Five Senses Nature Activity

  1. Find a comfortable spot wherever you are and nestle into it.
  2. Close your eyes and focus on your breath.
  3. Begin to dream about your favorite space.
  4. Imagine yourself into your nature space. Give yourself time to appreciate your surroundings as you breathe in and breathe out.
  5. Tune in with your five senses:
    1. What do you see? Notice what’s above and around you. Notice the many colors and details in your nature space as you look around.
    2. What do you hear? Listen closely to the big and little sounds. Can you hear the rush of the wind, the trickle of water, the crackle of a campfire?
    3. What do you feel? Is it warm or cool where you are? Are you standing on hard rock, or is there sand or dirt beneath your feet?
    4. What do you smell? Maybe the scent of balsam pine or a native flower?
    5. What do you taste? Fresh air, fresh water, the perfect trip snack you brought with you?

You can make this mindfulness nature activity as short or as long as you want. The best part is, you can revisit your nature space whenever you want to from wherever you are!

If you would like to take this activity one step further, put pencils, watercolor, or crayon to paper, draw your nature space, and write beneath it: I see… I hear…. I feel… I smell… I taste…

Have fun! We would love nothing more than to see your nature space picture or hear your nature space poem. Share it with us at info(at)woodcraftcamps.com if you are so inclined!

See you soon at your favorite summer camp!

Warmest Wishes,

Your Woodcraft Family
